Keyword Selection: The Most Important Factor in SEO
Choice of keywords to use in a website is something most people decide on long before they even launch their websites. There are some questions that can help you know the keywords you need to factor in. For instance, what budget are you planning to work with? You may find that the keywords related to your site are quite competitive but your budget is on the low side. Do you operate as a sole proprietor or as a big company?
When choosing a keyword, go for words that narrow down the search to what your site is all about. This will ensure that you do not get stuck with the wrong or highly competitive keywords. This applies to link building as well. Narrow it down to specific qwords that will lead browsers to your site even if it means using a long name. For example, avoid using a keyword like “Car Repair” as it’s too broad and likely to lead visitors to different other sites. Narrow it down to your locality if need be, such as, “Car Repair in Brisbane, CA”
Modifying highly competitive keywords can cost thousands in dollars which is way above what most people have to spend on SEO. What you can do in such a case is look for similar keywords. Type them in search engines such as Google and see what type of results come up. Alternatively, you can use the “Google ad words Keyword Tool”. If popular sites come up then it will not be wise to use the keyword. But if only blogs, articles or deep-link URLs come up in the first page, it means no site is using the keyword. Using such a keyword will probably give you a first page ranking in search results.
Do not use the same keyword for the entire website. Use different Meta titles for the different deep links in each page. This will ensure that you attain maximum keyword application and that you rank well on other Google keywords.
It may take up to a few days trying to come up with strong keywords for your site but do not be discouraged. Remember that stronger keywords will make it easier for you to build links too. Keep off short keywords that are commonly used as they are highly competitive. You are better off with an unpopular word that will give you a first page ranking than a competitive word which may not give you any ranking at all. You are seeking to sell yourself, not bet swallowed by big the online names.
