Michael Jeffrey Jordan (born February 17, 1963) is a retired NBA pro basketball player and active businessman. His biography on the National Basketball Association (NBA) website reports, “By acclamation, Michael Jordan is the greatest basketball player of all time.” Jordan was one of the most successfully marketed athletes of his era and was instrumental in popularizing the National Basketball Association around the world between 1990 and 2000.

Subsequent to a standout career at UNC, at which he led the Tarheels to a National Championship Title in 1982, Jordan became a member of the National Basketball Association’s Chicago Bulls in 1984. He immediately blossomed as a league celebrity, compelling crowds with his productive scoring. His dunking talent, highlighted by executing slam dunks from the free throw line in slam dunk contests, gained him the names “Air Jordan” and “His Airness”. He also acquired a reputation for being one of the greatest defensive players in basketball. In 1991, he landed his first National Basketball Association trophy with the Bulls, and followed that achievement with titles in 1992 and 1993, securing a “three-peat”. Although Michael Jordan abruptly retired from basketball at the beginning of the 1993–94 National Basketball Association season to pursue a career in baseball, he rejoined the Bulls in 1995 and led them to three additional championships (1996, 1997, and 1998) as well as an NBA-record 72 regular-season wins in the 1995-96 National Basketball Association season. Michael retired for a second time in 1999, but returned for two more National Basketball Association seasons in 2001 as a member of the Washington Wizards.
